Sometimes it’s hard to get a good workout when you are a busy mum with young kids. TRX V ups offer a time efficient core exercise – and your little one can join in.

Heidi, mum of 3 loves the TRX, especially when it comes to working her core. Heidi has always been an exerciser and still regularly goes to the gym and plays hockey. But time is short when you are juggling the needs of a partner, 3 kids, 2 dogs and a guinea pig. Her workouts need to be fast and effective. The TRX allows her to get a great workout in minimum time, with a few intense exercises done to ‘failure’.

One such as exercise is the TRX V up. Whilst highlighted as a core exercise, the TRX V up actually works your whole body, with particular focus on supporting your own body weight and activating the deeper muscles of the torso.

This is not an exercise for the immediately post natal stage. But further down the track, when any abdominal separation has closed, the hips and pelvis have re-stabilized, the pelvic floor is working correctly and the abdominal muscles have been reconditioned with a consistent and progressive program, TRX V ups are a great challenge.

If V ups look a little scary to do straight off, begin by performing plank on your forearms with your feet in the TRX loops. Next hold a plank position on your hands. Once you feel confident with this, bring your knees in and out to your chest. After this becomes doable you are ready to try V ups – check out Heidi in the video below for a great demonstration. If nothing else you will provide quite a show for your kids.

Remember your kids just want to be with you and do what you are doing. Let them be your mini personal trainer by counting your reps or cheering you on – perhaps from the side line, rather than underneath as Heidi and Eloise do, until you know you have mastered the exercise. If they want to emulate you – great! Foster an interest in exercise early in life, make fitness fun and hopefully your child will value healthy habits for their whole life.

As long as it is safe, let them have a go at the exercise. A TRX over a mat is not the same as dumbbells over their heads. Eloise who is just 3 years old did the exercise on her elbows instead of her hands – she wanted to do it, she did it well, she thought it was fun and loved that she was working out with her mum.
